How Japanese People Spend the End of the Year

日本にほんでは、年末ねんまつに昔むかしから続つづく習慣しゅうかんがあります。

In Japan, there are traditional customs that people have followed at the end of the year.

そのひとつが、大掃除おおそうじです。

One of them is doing a big year-end cleaning.

一年いちねんの汚よごれを落おとして、きれいな気持きもちで新年しんねんを迎むかえるために、家いえを掃除そうじします。

People clean their homes to remove the dirt of the past year and welcome the New Year with a fresh feeling.

年越としこしの夜よるには、年越としこしそばを食たべます。

On New Year’s Eve, people eat toshikoshi soba.

そばは長ながく細ほそいため、長ながく生いきられるように、という願ねがいが込こめられています。

Because soba noodles are long and thin, they symbolize a wish for a long life.

また、夜よるになると、お寺おてらで除夜じょやの鐘かねが鳴なります。

Later at night, temples ring the Joya no Kane bells.

この鐘かねは百八ひゃくはち回かい鳴ならされ、人間げんの煩悩ぼんのうの数かずだと言いわれています。

The bell is rung 108 times, which is said to represent the number of human desires.

年末ねんまつの習慣しゅうかんには、一年いちねんを振ふり返かえり、新あたらしい年としを大切たいせつに迎むかえる意味いみが込こめられています。

These year-end customs reflect the idea of looking back on the past year and welcoming the new one with care.
